Dressed in jeans and a cardigan, her hair closely cropped, it's clear Emma Watson has moved on from the role which, for many years, defined her.

Once undistinguishable from her alter ego Hermione, the 20-year-old is now barely recognisable as the tousle-haired Harry Potter star.

And that's sure to be the plan. As she headed back to the U.S. for the start of the new university term, a widely smiling Emma seemed delighted with her new look.
